Description
If you don't have a kite, try making one instead.
You will need:
bin liner or foil wrapping paper
2 thin bamboo canes or long bamboo skewers
Ruler for measuring and then for the handle
Acrylic paints/brushes or permanant pens to decorate
Scissors
Ball of string
Sellotape
Stanley knife
Hole punch
Cut out a diamond kite shape (about 50cm by 40cm) from the bin liner/wrapping paper and hole punch in each corner.
Put 2 strips of sellotape across the kite, one 10cm from the top, and one 7cm from the bottom, then using a knife cut some slits in this sellotape and through the kite.
Cross the bamboo canes/skewers over the kite into '+' shape, and put each end through one of the holes in the kite, then sellotape down to secure. Decorate the kites with pens/paints.
Cut one metre length of string, and thread it through both slits and tie the ends in a knot. Make a hoop, and tie the end of the ball of string through this hoop.
Cut the string a few metres down, and wrap it around the ruler.
You can decorate the string and make it into the tail of the kite, using the bits left over from the plastic bin liner or foil paper.
Challenge the children to see how high they can fly their kites on a windy day.
