History of Valentines Day
Valentines Day falls on February the 14th of each year in the Gregorian calendar. It is named after the two Christian Martyrs, Saint Valentine of Rome and Saint Valentine of Terni. It is often disputed if these were the same people.
The history of Valentines Day all began during third century Rome. At the time, the Roman Empire was under the rule of Emperor Claudius II. Claudius believed that single men were better soldiers than married ones. He then put his thoughts into action and made marriage for soldiers illegal; soldiers who disobeyed this law were sentenced to death. Valentine being a Roman Catholic believed that couples should be allowed to marry, and he held secret marriage ceremonies. This lead on to him being found out and was sentenced to death.
Rumor has it that Saint Valentine fell in love with the jailors daughter. Before St. Valentine’s execution, he sent his lover a letter and signed it "your valentine" which is often still used today. This would have been the first ever Valentines love letter sent.
